THE nation’s proudest day is fast becoming our most violent, with alcohol-fuelled assaults almost doubling on Australia Day across Victoria, alarming statistics reveal.
Police figures show there were 121 non-family violence-related assaults on January 26 in Victoria last year – almost double the number on an average day.
In 2012, there were 109 assaults reported to police on Australia Day, slightly down from the 121 the previous year.
